In the Middle Ages, the port was located at the chevet of Saint-Pierre church, close to the Tour Leroy tower. Its proximity to the sea meant that ships could sail up the Orne to Caen. Today, far from its original purpose, the Bassin Saint-Pierre is a major focal point of life in Caen. It is here that one of the biggest markets in the region is held on Sunday mornings. In summer, bars set up temporary terraces along the quays.
